The Limitations of Media Freedom : Competing against fake news, trash news, and trying to function as an effective government watchdog.
The Tembisa 10 is an example of fake news generated sheerly for undeserved attention. How does genuine news compete? How does the news keep itself relevant when shockworthy and fake news dominate screens and important stories get lost on the timeline forever? Can we, or should we rely on the big tech platforms (Twitter, Facebook, etc) to monitor content and tackle fake news? Should they have the power to determine what we see or don’t see? If not them, then who? How can the news triumph over these challenges and effect democratic change?
