We Stand for Freedom
The captivating contemporary dance performance, “We Stand For Freedom” opens up the conversation about fundamental human rights, such as the right to life, identity, and home, as well as the significance of solidarity.
Choreographed by acclaimed Ukrainian Choreographer Kateryna Aloshyna and performed by talented South African dancers, “We Stand for Freedom” reflects on what the fight for freedom means for Ukrainians and South Africans.
The performance involves the audience in interactive participation via digital medium. Based on the responses received, the dancers adapt the performance on stage. Choreographer Kateryna Aloshyna explains that “Art speaks simultaneously to the heads and hearts of every human. And, our performance seeks to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions regarding the importance of freedom and defending human rights worldwide.”
The performance “We Stand for Freedom” consists of four blocks that address:
- The humanitarian crisis and the impact of armed conflicts on children,
- Gender-based violence and the impact of war on women,
- What does it mean to be free and be able to choose for members of our society,
- Solidarity and our personal responsibility to act NOW.
The performance ‘We Stand for Freedom’ is a joint effort of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, the Ukrainian Association of South Africa, and Resilient Ukraine.
“As young democracies, both South Africa and Ukraine share and retain a tangible connection to the idea of freedom and justice – ideals which we must never take for granted,” says Janet Jobson, CEO of the Tutu Legacy Foundation. She said, “The Arch reminded us often of the interconnectedness of all humanity – that ultimately our futures are fundamentally tied up in each other. The injustices and atrocities being meted out to the Ukrainian people must be stopped immediately.”
