Sophie Joans is a theatre-maker, producer, stand-up comic, improviser and clown. With her ukulele comedy act, she has toured the country and completed a challenge of performing 100 shows in 5 months. Some of her performance highlights include: playing the Mother City Comedy Festival ‘19, The State Theatre’s Shampoonaiza, Park Acoustics, Cape Town Comedy Club and Melville Comedy Club. She pioneered an Instagram Live Show during hardlockdown, Live At The ‘Coronno’, which hosted some of SA’s favourite comics. She also ran Flight of the Wrong Chords on Cape Town Comedy TV with Phil de Lange. She’s the founder of Spark in the Dark Productions, a company specializing in the hybrid of theatre and the digital space. She co-founded the popular storytelling event, Raunchy Renditions in 2019. She hosted and performed at Play Things (The Alexander Bar’s famous monthly experimental showcase).  She also started @Scenes_on_Screens – a virtual theatre on Instagram in response to lockdown.

As a theatre-maker, she has co-created plays such as The Flower Hunters (a series of sketch comedies)and Do You Dream In Colour (Most Innovative Play, Zabalaza Festival, 2018).  She’s been a long term member of The Second Liners Improv Comedy Troupe, and performed at the Mama City Improv Festival for two consecutive years. She has also run several Improv workshops, and performed in Dubai. As a clown she’s been a street performer at the Edinburgh Fringe Fest, KKNK and the National Arts Festival.  She was recently one of 5 winners of the STAND Foundation’s Satirical Writing Competition. She started a BA in Theatre-making at UCT that she is currently finishing at Wits.
