My name is Mikayla Joy Brown. I am 23 years old and based in Cape Town. In 2021, I completed my degree in Drama at Stellenbosch University. A year later, I completed my Honours in Creative Writing. I wrote and directed my first play, Jantjies and the Pearls in 2022. The play is set in District Six and explores how the District Six community was affected by the forced land removals. The play performed at the Stellenbosch Drama Department’s theatre festival, Premiere where it won for best text and best ensemble. In 2023, Jantjies and the Pearls further played at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunste Fees in Oudtshoorn and will play at Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.
Though I adore theatre, I also have a deep passion for film. I am currently doing a writer’s internship at Tomas Films. I’d hope to one day direct and produce my screenplays!
My directing style is quite quirky. I love using physical theatre elements and music within in my work. Though a film director, I am very much inspired by Wes Anderson’s eccentric films. I am enthralled by how comedy can be used to usher in deeper meaning.
